What is intercultural competence?

Intercultural competence is an individual’s and organization’s ability
to recognize and adapt to cultural differences in order to:

  • build stronger cross-cultural relationships

  • create inclusive and equitable workplaces

  • achieve organizational and social goals

Why is Intercultural Competence the foundation of the IC Edge approach?

  • Simply put, it is a mindset and skill that allows an individual to work effectively across cultural differences based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ableness, generation, and many more identities that make us different. Since organizations are made up of individuals, starting at the people level, the entire organization is transformed to a higher level of intercultural competence.

  • An interculturally incompetent organization will commonly struggle to genuinely and authentically foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Such an organization often gets caught in the many misconceptions about diversity work (what we call diversity clutter) and will go in circles until people in the organization are fatigued and stuck. Having intercultural competence as the foundation eliminates this diversity fatigue and creates a more inspired organization.
